July: Message From the President

A MESSAGE FROM THE COUNCIL PRESIDENT

During the month of June we had two major networking events that brought together our Corporate Members and certified MBEs. On Tuesday, June 7th we hosted our annual Networking for Scholarships event at the Montclair Golf Club in West Orange, NJ. More than 150 of our corporate members and MBEs enjoyed a relaxing day of golf and other activities that facilitated new business relationships, and enhanced existing ones. On the following day, June 8th, we held our Business Opportunity Expo at the Meadowlands Exposition Center in Secaucus, NJ. The day began with an interview conducted by Clint Grimes of Time Warner with Ms. Joset Wright- Lacy, President of the National Minority Supplier Development Council. She provided information on the various programs and initiatives of the NMSDC.

The Expo featured workshops that enabled our Corporate Members to discuss ways to enhance their supplier diversity programs, educate MBEs on techniques to help to grow their businesses, and also featured more than 100 matchmaking sessions that connected corporate members and MBEs together for new business opportunities. The Expo also enabled MBEs and Corporate members to develop or enhance business relationships at the various business booths for Corporate members and MBES as part of the afternoon’s activities. The day concluded with a networking reception, giving all attendees the chance to meet and mingle in a relaxing atmosphere. As always, the Council appreciates your continued support and participation in these and all of our other events.

Also, many thanks to those that attended our Financial Services Symposium at Guggenheim Partners on June 15th. This event featured information on doing business with financial services firms, matchmaking opportunities and an inspiring conversation with David Stewart, president of Worldwide Technologies.

In July, we will introduce our first mentorship program, the CEO Academy, which is in partnership with our prime sponsor, Wells Fargo and several of our corporate partners, and will be presented by the faculty of Rutgers University School of Business in Newark, NJ. This program, which is geared toward our Class 2 and 3 MBEs, will provide executive education, one-to-one mentorship and business management seminars that will enhance the business acumen of the participants and put them in a position to take better advantage of market opportunities. Two additional mentorship programs will be introduced for the other classes of MBEs over the next 6 months.
